We leave tomorrow, October 30th, 2009 for Haiti. 22 US team members and 25-35 local team members. We expect to see over 2500 patients and will be traveling to some pretty remote places in Haiti. We have over 600 lbs of medicines that we are taking in addition to our equipment. We have a photo journalist and a video journalist who will be with us, 4 doctors, 6 nurses, a pharmacist (me) and 1 pastor and 10 lay people. We’ll have 2 security guards with us at all times, a police escort from the border from the Dominican Republic into Haiti, and police to watch over us. Sounds dramatic, but I've been told it’s really only precautionary.
We’ll be seeing 10 projects with 100 children each but we usually get non-project children and adults too. Clinics will be run every day, from 8am until we’re done. We finally got our clearance in writing from the Minister of Health in Haiti to bring the team and medicines in. We arrive in the Dominican Republic and then drive up into Haiti. In Santiago, we will stay at the Hodelpa Garden Court. In Cap-Hatien, we will stay in Mont Joli. I looked these hotels up online and they look nice (esp. the one in Santiago). Our itinerary is below. Itinerary:
Friday October 30: Depart home city, meet whole team in Miami, fly into DR – arrive Santiago and spend the night
Saturday October 31: depart Santiago on "tour bus" to Cap-Haitien; departs at noon (4.5hr trip)
Sunday November 1: Travel to Trou-De-Nord for clinic (45 min to project)
Monday November 2: Travel to Limbe for clinic (about an 1 hr to get to the area)
Tuesday November 3: Travel to Juana Mendez for clinic (about 1.5 hr to get to area)
Wednesday November 4: Cap Haitien clinics (in town)
Thursday November 5: Justinian Hospital and free afternoon
Friday November 6: depart Cap-Haitien on bus to Santiago: departs at 9am (4.5 hr trip) Dinner w/ baseball players from the US and the DR
Saturday November 7: Clinic with baseball players in Santiago to open new community center
Sunday November 8: depart for home
