A CULTURE SO DIFFERENT, EMOTIONS SO SIMILAR!
OF THE YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL: LOSS is the story of Apu, a young man struggling with death and the meaning of the history left in its wake. Born into a culture of strong tradition and extreme personal freedom, Apu has experienced life well beyond his nine years. Herding cattle with his father and going through the rights of passage to become a man, his world is suddenly turned upside-down when his sick mother passes away in his arms. At her funeral, Apu is shocked and saddened to find that most members of the tribe do not seem to mourn for his mother. As a mysterious Elder watches him through the crowds, a despondent and confused Apu, accompanied by his best friend Saitale, heads into the bush in an effort to deal with his anguish. To Apu's surprise, Saitale actually brings his grieving friend to the home of the mysterious Elder. When Apu confronts this enigmatic man hoping to learn his motivations, the Elder tells Apu the story of a vivacious, young girl; a young girl who always saw brightness where there were only shadows, and who, later in life, would fall in love with a handsome, young warrior of the tribe. Apu learns that the stories passed down through generations give meaning to the human experience and will transcend the life of any single tribe member - and that his mother's life is no different. Through the Elder, Apu comes to understand that his mother will be revered and remembered as a generous spirit whose life will always contribute to her tribe's past, present and future.
